Courses Taught

  • ENL 266: Technical Communication. Developed a blended class, combining online and face-to-face activities. Assignments and activities focused on research and analysis of technical communication genres and the application of key concepts.
  • ENL 453: Advanced Writing Workshop—Style. Focused on the theory and practice of stylistic techniques, analyzing and applying different strategies to a range of professional writing texts.
  • ENL 350: Report and Proposal Writing. This class covers proposal writing and reports in the workplace, including the work of nonprofit foundations. Assignments focused on researching and analyzing the ways in which reports and proposals create and sustain workplace relationships and facilitate decision-making processes.
  • ENL 257: Introduction to Rhetorical Studies. A required class for writing majors. Assignments and activities include analyzing and applying ancient rhetorical concepts to modern texts.
  • ENL 600: Technical and Business Writing. A graduate-level course designed to introduce students to the theory and practices in technical and business communication. Students write a research blog, synthesizing and extending course readings and write a wiki, researching current issues in technical and business writing.

Advising

  • Reader for 5 graduate students’ thesis committees: Kris Cambra, Sarah Curow, Retha Highley, Laura McMahon, and Katherine Newport
  • Advise and register English majors (13 assigned students)
  • Advise students at the department’s open advising sessions
  • Participated in English Department’s Open House, November 3, 1010, talking to new and current students about their projects and goals
  • Attend poster presentations by graduate students in the Professional Writing Program (Spring semester)
  • Write letters of recommendation for students applying to graduate school, internships, or jobs
  • Maintained regular office hours of more than 4 hours on at least 3 days

Other Teaching

  • Piloted a learning management system (Moodlerooms) for CITS in ENL 600 and participated in faculty discussions about its strengths and weaknesses, Spring 2011
  • Continue to develop and use myCourses for face-to-face classes. Websites provided assignments, readings, and links to online resources. Sites also provided a space for students to discuss the readings and to share written work.
